5 lbs heritage oranges
1 tbs vanilla extract or 1 vanilla bean
2 small cinnamon sticks
3 c raw sugar
5 liter box of drinkable dry white wine or 6-750 ml bottles
750 ml vodka (cheap)
Feel free to cut this recipe in half, but know that you’ll regret running out in the heat of August. Trust me, it’s worth it!
Wash oranges well, then slice them into thin rounds. Layer the fruit and sugar in 3 – 1 gallon jars or in a food safe plastic bucket. Allow to macerate overnight.
The next day add the wine, vodka, vanilla and cinnamon sticks. Store in a cool, dark place for at least 2 months. When ready to bottle, strain the liquid, pressing on the solids to get every last bit of goodness. Bottle and store out of the sunlight.
Enjoy Vin de Orange on the rocks, or topped with a sparkling wine and a twist of orange peel for a wonderful champagne cocktail. It’s also great in place of Campari in a classic Negroni. And it makes a perfect gift (if you can part with it)!
